About
Overview
Our laboratory researches methods and technologies for designing things and services that provide better user experiences (UX).
Specifically, we aim to investigate and measure user and environmental characteristics and apply them to the design of products, services, and user interfaces (UI). Our approaches range from cognitive psychology experiments in which we design experimental tasks and measure work performance, gaze data, and operation logs, to field studies such as on-site behavioral observation, questionnaire surveys, and user interviews, to actual environment verification in workshops and living labs. The tools used for experiments and prototyping are diverse, ranging from UI simulators and software to sensor-based devices such as Arduino, UI prototyping tools, VR, and product prototypes.
Activity in the Laboratory
Seminar (3rd―year students)
In the first year of assignment to the laboratory, students spend a year learning the knowledge and techniques required for graduation research as a seminar.
In particular, students learn about research and evaluation methods using design research, prototyping techniques, and presentation techniques through actual design projects and acquire these skills as their own. Through existing projects, students will develop the ability to identify issues and design measures in the real world (onsite).
Graduation Research (4th―year students)
As a summary of what students have learned in the Department of Creative Design, they will set their research theme and complete it as a research result over the year.
In the graduation research, students begin by setting their research themes based on their interests in design. Then, at weekly laboratory meetings, we discuss how to proceed, research methods, and results. In our laboratory, students evaluate strategies using appropriate methods and summarize their research results in a graduation thesis.
